July 2024 Meeting Minutes
July 15, 2024
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 7:29 pm by Grand Knight (GK) Joe Tarallo.
Warden’s Report
All present were in possession of a current membership card.
Opening Prayer
Opening prayer was led by GK Joe Tarallo.
Pledge of Allegiance
Salute to the flag was led by the council members.
Chaplain report
There was no chaplain report as the Chaplain was not present.
Minutes of the Previous Meeting
Minutes of the previous meeting were accepted on a motion by Bob Jacobs, seconded by Tom Rohe, approved with a unanimous vote.
Grand Knight’s Report (Joe Tarallo)
Today we are joined by a few special guests:
Greg Keller, former Federation Chairman, is here to award the annual high school scholarship to to William Smitreski, who is joined by his family.
PJ Feruggia, FOCUS missionary at Assumption University in Worcester, MA addressed the council. He is bringing the gospel to university students and will be continuing his ministry in Boston. He is grateful for past and continuing support from the Council.
Mike Calabrese, member of the Catholic Charities Board and member of the Succasunna council addressed the Council. He was grateful for our pledge of $10,000 over 3 years in support of the Fr. English Center. This project will cost approximately $4.5 million and will take 2 years to refurbish the Center. Thus far, donations are only a few hundre3d thousand dollars from the goal. Approximately $75,000 was pledged from Knights Councils. This renovation will make the Center more like a supermarket. Those in need will qualify for points and can shop up to the point limit. They are also working on nutrition guidance and providing suitable attire for job interviews. Once complete, the Center will provide service to the needy for many years to come.
Congratulations to Rob Marsac and Ricardo Espinola who were exemplified today, along with Waleed Al Nasser.
Parish Center repairs – 16 more lights were completed and we are upgrading the Wi-Fi.
We have received many thank you notes, including those from the Special Olympics, Catholic Charities, scholarship recipients and Birth Haven (for diaper and baby bottle drives).
Federation Golf Outing – we will be sponsoring a hole for the 9/23/2024 event
We are putting together a census of veterans of the Korea and Vietnam wars. We want to get a complete list of those that went to Korea and Vietnam, including those that are deceased.
We will be using a simplified form for programs as they are completed to record the outcome of each project contemporaneously to ease the paperwork burden.
Treasurer’s Report (Wally Krake Jr.)
The Bank statement was sent to trustees. A copy can be obtained upon request.
Please remember that bingo funds our operations so we must continue to watch over and protect the business.
Membership Report (Chip Sturm)
We had a great CUF ceremony tonight. We will keep recruiting.
Financial Secretary’s Report (Gerard Petrocelli)
Financial secretary’s report is emailed in advance to Trustees for approval of expenditures.
Program Reports – Led by John Watral
Bingo (Mike Mallon) – Things have been going well and the machines have been working as expected. We have had no complaints.
Soup Kitchen (Lenny Martin)– next event scheduled for the end of the month.
Blood Drive (John Watral) – Next drive is August 10.
Lighting project (Tom Rohe) – Lighting is completed for half of the classrooms. Next installation will be Saturday, 7/27/2024.
Fourth Degree (Tom Rohe) – The 4th Degree is doing fine. There will be a meeting tomorrow and all are welcome to attend. There will be a Pasta Dinner at St. Theresa’s in October.
Squires (Tom Rohe) – The Squires are alive and well. The Tank Pull went well and a rafting trip is being planned.

- July Religious & Civil Rights (R&C) Talking Points highlights from Dr. Dan Rossi, PSD:
This month’s talking and informational points for discussion and prayer focus on newly introduced legislation that that would further expand abortion access in New Jersey. S3452 would:
o Enshrine into state law the NJ Dept. of Banking and Insurance regulations that eliminate all out-of-pocket costs for abortions by mandating all state-regulated health plans cover 100% of the procedure. Not only could this increase consumers’ health insurance premiums, but it will allocate an undetermined amount of public funding to pay for abortions for patients who have Medicaid.
o Enshrine into state law the Board of Medical Examiner’s regulations granting non-physicians permission to perform abortions; and
o Prohibit malpractice insurance providers from penalizing medical professionals for providing abortions or gender-affirming care on the basis the procedures are illegal in other states.
As Catholics we understand that abortion is not healthcare because it is a direct attack on the dignity and sacredness of human life.
• Additionally, the supporters claim the legislation is necessary because abortion rights are under attack. Despite this claim, unlike other states, New Jersey has no major restrictions on abortions, such as waiting periods, mandated parental notifications, or limitations on the use of public funding to subsidize these procedures.
• Please consider taking action as soon as possible to stop the threatening expansion of abortion access in New Jersey by contacting your State Senator and ask that they urge their colleagues to vote “NO” on the bill.

Unfinished Business
- Motion to donate $300 per month ($3,600 total) to support PJ Faruggia in his college ministry payable to Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) was made by Dan Fuller and seconded by Mike Mallon – Second Reading Passed Unanimously
New Business
- Motion to donate $500 to St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School supporting Catholic Education along with honoring the memory of 8 alumni, including Mark Petrocelli, who perished on 9/11/2001 was made by Tom Rohe and Seconded by Pierre Kernizan – Passed Unanimously.
- Motion to donate $100 to the Mt. Olive High School Girls Soccer Booster Club, helping to support the purchase of practice tee shirts for the girls soccer team was made by Bib Jacobs and seconded by Rob Marsac – Passed Unanimously.
- Motion to donate up to $2,500 to help support the Colon family purchase a Hoyer Lift for Rinaldo Colon was made by Chip Sturm and seconded by Lenny Martin – First Reading Passed Unanimously (First Reading).
Good of the Order
The Good of the Order was directed by John Watral.
Closing Prayer
Closing prayer was led by GK Joe Taralllo.
